Mary Jennings

(née Tierney)

28th March 1928 - 2nd September 2024

Mary Jennings of Yonkers, New York departed this life on September 2, 2024 while sleeping peacefully. She was in her 96th year. Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, John (Alice) Jennings, and daughter, Colette (Robert) McCabe. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Caitlin (James) McMorrow, Brianna, Ciara, Kyle, Ryan, Jake, Joshua, and Grace who have treasured memories of their dear grandmother, and her great-grandchildren, Cara and Cian. All who loved her dearly will never forget her smile, laugh, wit, charm, grace, and undying love and caring for them. Her kindness and devotion to her family will be forever cherished.

MAY HER GENTLE SOUL REST IN PEACE

Mary was born in Aughadreena, Crosskeys, County Cavan, Ireland to Luke and Mary Tierney on March 28, 1928. She attended Killycondon National School in Stradone. Mary emigrated to America at the age of 21 to New York City. In 1963 Mary married John Jennings of Louisburgh, County Mayo in St. Francis de Sales Church in New York. She was his loving wife until his passing in 2020. John and Mary had two children, John Joseph and Colette Mary. They raised them in the Bronx, New York, and moved to Yonkers in 1982. Later in life, Mary found great joy in her role as grandmother, and embraced every moment she spent with her grandchildren.

Mary lived an incredible fulfilling life. She had a cheerful smile, entertaining sense of humor, and sweet and light hearted demeanour that was palpable every day of her life. Mary was a dedicated mother who treasured her children. She and John worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for them, and she put every ounce of her soul into making sure everyone was put first, well before her own needs. A woman of steadfast faith, she instilled the importance of God and shaped her children’s spirituality by sending them to Catholic schools and bringing them to Mass every Sunday. She lived her faith through example and was a very giving and positive person. Mary worked in several roles throughout her life as homemaker, phone operator, waitress, superintendent, and realtor, but her greatest joy was her family, whom her life was anchored in. She loved Irish dancing, music, and making the best soda bread. It was the simple things in life that meant the most to Mary; a cup of tea, a good chat, and spending time with her loved ones was what she cherished. Mary delighted in her role as grandmother, showering each grandchild with love and attention. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from her. Her abundant nurturing love and gift of joy, shown through her positive, tenacious spirit, constant smiling and laughter and beautiful way, will never be forgotten.
