Ballyhaise upset champions Gowna on weekend of shocks

Round-up

Ballyhaise produced the shock of the championship so far as they upset Gowna by 3-8 to 0-16 at a rain-sodden Ballinagh.

First-half goals from David Brady (a pinpoint 45-metre effort into an empty net), Michael Brady and Martin Conaty propelled Ballyhaise into a nine-point lead but Gowna reeled them in, with Cian and Tiarnan Madden registering frees and Oisin Pierson sharp from play.

But late points from David Brady and Cormac Callaghan restored a cushion and last year's intermediate winners held on.

Earlier on in Virginia, Castlerahan had a five-point win over Lavey, highlighted by some great efforts from Oisin O'Connell and 0-3 from Man of the Match Stephen Cooney.

Redhills landed 8-5 in a big win over Mountnugent while Cootehill Celtic had a hard-fought one-point win over Killinkere.

Meanwhile, Shannon Gaels and Swanlinbar drew in the JFC. Denn bagged first-half goals from Thomas Edward Donohoe and Oran Callaghan as they swept past Lacken.

County star Ciaran Brady bagged two goals, with Thomas Partington and Kevin Bouchier getting one each, as Arva ran out 25-point winners over Templeport.

Munterconnaught impressed in inflicting a first defeat on Drung with a 1-7 to 1-1 win.

Earlier, there were wins for Cavan Gaels and Kingscourt in the Senior Championship.

The Stars had four points to spare against Killygarry on Friday. A well-taken goal from Odhran Cunningham and a palmed effort from Sean Burke after great work from Jordan Morris were key as Kingscourt maintained their unbeatean run.

In Cornafean this evening, Cavan Gaels had a goal to spare against Ballinagh. Luke Molloy rattled the net in the first half of a fractious encounter and while Jack Tully had a penalty saved by Fionn Keating, the Gaels did enough to win by 1-10 to 0-10.

Mullahoran and Ramor United drew (1-6 to 0-9) with Knockbride stretching their unbeaten run to three games with a good win over Belturbet.

Elsewhere, a late point from Niall Clerkin saw Shercock grab a draw against Drumgoon in a low-scoring affair (1-6 to 0-9). Cuchulainns defeated Ballymachugh, Butlersbridge had nine points to spare over Drumlane and Kildallan got their first point when they drew with high-flying Kill Shamrocks.
