Cully’s bread wins the Taste test... yet again!

Cully’s Craft Bakery in Arva has won a Great Taste 2024 award for its Multiseed Loaf. The local bakery is no stranger to food awards having also been named among the top food producers nationally last year.

The judges deemed Cully’s Multiseed Loaf to be “an enticing, nicely baked, well-aerated loaf, rich with seeds and flakes”.

Made with sunflower seeds, brown linseed, pumpkin seeds, wholemeal rye flour, oats, wheat bran, dried wheat sourdough, the loaf was one of 5,590 products to receive a Great Taste award in 2024.

Brían Cully from Cully’s Craft Bakery added: “We are thrilled to have won a Great Taste award for our multiseed loaf. We have dreamt of this moment and are so proud to be adding the prestigious black and gold Great Taste badge of honour to our loaf.”

He says the recognition “means so much” to independent producers like Cully’s.

“It makes all the hard work and determination worth it,” he continued.

“Great Taste is the most recognised accolade for taste and quality in the food and drink industry, so it’s a huge moment for us.”

It’s not the first Great Taste award for the popular local bakery.

“Back in 2020 the buttermilk soda got an award and in 2023 we got Gold in the Blas na hÉireann Awards for the white pan, brown pan and buttermilk soda; while the plain loaf clinched a bronze.”

Cully’s Bakery has also been shortlisted for the Blas na hÉireann Awards again this year where three of its products - the plain batch loaf, sliced batch loaf and white sliced pan - are all vying for those much-coveted food accolades.

“Winning awards gives us a great boost,” says Brían. “It helps us to know that we are making a good quality product. People have become more aware of the food they are eating and where the ingredients are coming from and we are very conscious of that.

“We are trying to use the least possible amount of preservatives as we can; this means that our breads won’t last as long on the shelves as the products from bigger bakeries do but we know that we are producing top quality bread and that is what we want.”

Cully’s Bakery has been in business for 70 years and testament to that success is the demand for its products in this region. “We are not competing with the bigger bakeries. We have a loyal customer base that continues to support us and that is something we are very grateful for,” Brían added.
