Going for Gold: Mullagh's Britney heads to Paris for Paralympics 2024

It will be back to back Paralympic appearances for her after competing in Tokyo in 2020.

Mullagh and Cavan are in the grip of Paralympic fever this week after the town’s own Britney Arendse left for training camp on Saturday morning ahead of her arrival in Paris on August 21 where she will line up in the Para Powerlifting competition on September 7.

Her appearance there will mean back to back Paralympic appearances after competing in Tokyo in 2020.

Prior to the competition, Britney said she planned to compete in Paris this year after which she will take a break to focus on recovery from injury.

Her mother Brigitte told the Celt on Tuesday that she and the family are “extremely proud” of Britney and her “amazing” achievements to date.

“Everyone is very excited and everyone has been so supportive to her,” added Brigitte. “In fact the support here in Mullagh and across Cavan is epic. She has made a big impact and she is amazing. We are looking forward to September 7; she is training hard at camp now. I will be heading over to Paris on September 4 and we will all be there rooting for her on September 7.”

Britney and her team left Mullagh on Saturday morning for training camp amid celebratory mode as locals came out in force to bid her luck. She is heading there, and having ranked sixth in her category in the worlds earlier this year, hopes are high that the local woman can bring a Paralympic medal back to east Cavan.
