Caught doing 161kmph in 80 zone near Cootehill

The clampdown on drivers speeding this August Bank Holiday Weekend continued with yet another driver caught travelling at twice the legal limit.

In the latest update from gardaí a motorist was clocked driving at 161km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R188 in Drumnagran, Cootehill.

Another was detected driving at 81km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R394 in Milltown, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath

Earlier this weekend a driver on the N3 was caught speeding doing 196km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N55 at Kilcogy.

An Garda Siochana's Road Policing operation began at 7am on Thursday morning, August 1, with officers out detecting poor driving behaviours such as driving above the speed limit as part of a the August Bank Holiday road safety operation.

From Saturday 3rd August at 7am to Sunday 4th August at 7am, almost 48,291 vehicles have been checked for speeding.

"It is positive that the majority of motorists are travelling within the designated speed, however, 135 drivers were detected during this period and some have been especially dangerous," said a garda spokesperson.

An Garda Síochána say they will continue to monitor and conduct checkpoints on our roads, using our technology to detect those speeding nationwide.
