Six Cavan community projects share in €570K funding

Cavan Leisure Centre and Project Belturbet were the biggest winners when it came to divvying out €570K of local amenity funding.

Six County Cavan projects - including in Blacklion, Mullagh, and two in Kingscourt - shared in the significant allocation announced today.

Cavan Regional Health and Sport & Leisure CLG received €194,432 for upgrade works at Cavan Sports Complex, for a new and extended gym plus new equipment.

Project Belturbet meanwhile were awarded €150,000 for the redevelopment of Morrissey Park.

St Kilian's Heritage Centre received €50,400 for refurbishment works on roof at the Heritage Centre; A similar amount - €50,301 - was awarded to Kingscourt Community Centre, also for roof refurbishment works; and Kingscourt Stars GAA Club also received €50,400 for the refurbishment of their meeting room.

Deputy Brendan Smith welcomed the news saying: "It is extremely important that the work of community groups is supported by government as these amenities contribute so much in ensuring that there is a good range of recreational and sporting facilities for all age groups throughout Cavan and Monaghan.

"I compliment Cavan County Council and Monaghan County Council and the local voluntary groups on submitting successful applications."

Successful applications in Co. Monaghan worth a total of €645,378 include €200,000 for the refurbishment of Ballybay Community Park; Carrickmacross Tidy Towns (€51,642); Teach na nDaoine Resource Centre (€56,000); St. Tiarnach's Primary School (€77,736); Carrickmacross Emmetts G.F.C (€80,000); Phoenix Centre Carrickmacross (€80,000); and Monaghan Town FC (€100,000).

The allocations were just the local component of €16.5 million earmarked for 185 community projects across the country made by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Community Recognition Fund.

“This is about giving back and saying ‘thank you’ to communities for what they do week-in, week-out," said Minister Heather Humphreys in announcing the funding.

“I look forward to seeing the positive impact that this funding will have on the ground in communities all across Ireland.”
