Dog training exercise takes place near Ballinagh

The proud owners of beautiful brown Water Spaniel dogs gathered at the shores of the tranquil White Lake in Drumcrow, a few kilometres from Ballinagh, early on Sunday morning to allow their dogs experience a live training and working session.

They came from Belfast, Dublin, Armagh, Galway and of course County Cavan and both the canines and their owners enjoyed the outing.

Laurence Lee, who is on the Committee of the Water Spaniel Club of Ireland, said it was the first time in a while that they hosted such an exercise. “This affords an opportunity to introduce new people and their dogs to on the ground training and show them what to do with their working dogs.”

The water spaniel is primarily a hunting breed but their owners frequently bring them to shows. “They are an Irish bred, wild-fowling dog and they are trained to retrieve on both land and water. My own dog Kizzy is a pick-up dog on driven shoots,” explained Laurence.

He told the Celt they are a nice placid and loyal dog and he has been familiar with them all his life, as his father also owned and trained water spaniels. “It was a natural progression for me to follow in his footsteps,” he said.

A raffle took place at the conclusion of the training session with proceeds to the Diabetic Association.
