€3M in motor tax receipts collected in Cavan
Motor Tax receipts at Cavan County Council for 2023 came in at €3M, which is allocated to a capital government fund. The information was shared on the back of a notice of motion by newly elected Cllr Niall Smith (FF) during the July meeting of the local authority.
Cllr Smith also asked what percentage of the money is being used to repair the county’s roads network.
“When I was out on the canvass, often there were three or four cars parked outside houses - people living at home and commuting to work - but there were constant complaints about the cost of taxing cars and the deteriorating state of the local roads,” he remarked.
Cllr Smith was told that, while €3M was taken in by Cavan County Council, €39M was allocated back to the local authority from central funds.
That money, together with €3M of the council’s own resources, means that €42M has been spent on roads infrastructure in Co Cavan in the last calendar year.
