Breifne College Cavan to celebrate Golden Jubilee

Breifne College will celebrate its golden jubilee on Friday, October 18, on the college campus.

Past pupils are being urged to come along to the celebrations and re-live their school days at what was formerly known as Cavan Tech.

It was in 1974 that the college, then known as Cavan Vocational School, moved from Farnham Street to its present site under then principal Ronan Rice.

The name of the college was changed to Breifne College in August 2006.

A number of events are planned to mark the October celebrations as acting principal, Breege O’Reilly, told the Celt this week.

“We’ve planned an action-packed occasion, filled with thrilling activities and heartfelt moments,” she said.

The celebrations will welcome former pupils to step back in time and take a walk through the corridors. While the school boasts modern amenities, it has retained the charm of its storied past.

“See first hand how our facilities have evolved, to support cutting-edge education and student success,” said Ms O’Reilly.

A gala dinner is also planned for fellow alumni, current students, parents, and staff where they can raise a toast to their shared heritage and future aspirations.

There will be plenty of musical entertainment and talent on display with live performances from talented students, alumni bands and local artists. The hugely popular High Stool Prophets are also on the bill.

There will be a special display of photo galleries cataloguing the students and teachers that passed through the college since 1974, as well as its many successes and enjoyable events.

The college has been further developed in recent years with top-class facilities and record student numbers on its rollbooks.

“Over the past five decades, on the Cootehill Road, Breifne College has blossomed into a beacon of educational excellence and community service. Our school has grown into a dynamic institution that nurtures talent, fosters innovation and serves the community with pride. This celebration is not just about looking back - it’s about recognising the achievements, that have shaped us and the bright future that lies ahead,” explained Ms O’Reilly.

This day is more than just a milestone. “It is also a celebration of the Breifne College community. Our doors are open to all who have been part of our journey - from the early pioneers to the latest graduates.

“This event promises to connect generations in a joyous tribute to our collective achievements,” said the current school head.

“As the acting principal of Breifne College, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have accomplished together. Our school has always been more than just a place of learning - it’s a community, a family. This celebration is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and spirit of everyone who has walked these corridors. I invite you all to join us in honouring our past and looking forward to an even brighter future,” concluded Ms O’Reilly.
