Taekwondo club raises over €3K for charity

It was a day filled with entertainment, camaraderie, and heartfelt remembrance, when members of the World Taekwondo Changmookwan club in Cavan hosted a special fundraising event and competition in memory of the late Ciara Bartels.

The culmination of their efforts, a sum of €3343, was shared between Cavan and Monaghan Palliative Care and Longford Hospice.

Cavan and Monaghan Palliative Care’s Jimmy Murray was presented with a cheque for €1,942 by the late Ciara’s father, Grandmaster Jan Bartels, a respected ninth Dan in Taekwondo, who leads the Cavan group.

Ciara, a beloved member of the Longford Town community, passed away in February.

It was in her memory, and with respect to her father Jan, that the local group hosted the fundraising event back in May that combined martial arts competitions, demonstrations, and a family fun day

Attendees enjoyed an array of activities throughout, with Taekwondo enthusiasts competing in various categories, showcasing their skills in this dynamic Korean martial art known for its striking techniques.

Additionally, the local Kendo club, which shares use of the Cavan Scouts Den venue with the Taekwondo group, provided an engaging demonstration of their swordsmanship skills.

Another of the unique highlights of the day was a tomahawk-throwing activity, adding an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings’
