Limerick 1-10

On Saturday last, Cavan camógs welcomed Limerick  to Dr. Plunkett Park, Kilnaleck for the final round of the Junior Championship. The Breffni women who had a poor run of form throughout the league turned to a new chapter as they secured their place in the Glen Dimplex Premier Junior Championship quarter finals after a hard earned win over Limerick.

Cavan secured three out of four wins throughout the championship, each game resulting in a exciting finale.

Just two minutes into Saturday’s fixture, corner-forward Sophie Slowey found the back of the net getting Cavan’s opening score of the day. Limerick forwards were quick to reply with Carla Griffin getting two points in a matter of moments afterwards.

Good defending from Debra smith and Ciara Shalvey saw the ball worked up the field into Laragh’s Niamh Keenaghan as she got her first score of the day in the 17th minute. In the 22nd minute things started to heat up as Limerick’s Ella Hession put the pressure on the Cavan defence and Cavan gave away a penalty.

A well-converted penalty from Carla Griffin saw the sides level for the first time in this clash. Both sides struggled to convert scores with a strong crossfield wind causing havoc. A well worked point from play from Shanise Fitzsimons gave her side a single point advantage at the break, Cavan just leading 1-04 to Limericks 1-03.

As the weather improved in the second half with the sun shining captain Fitzsimons knocked over a point from play at her ease as she coasted past the Limerick defence. Both Ella Hession and Carla Griffin got scores on the board for Limerick in the third quarter of this game.

Both sides battled extremely hard in search of a win to secure their place in the quarter-finals, both conceding many frees. Limerick broke through Cavan’s defence putting huge pressure on ‘keeper Ellis, but a cool and calm Michelle made a crucial save to keep her side ticking over.

In the 17th and 20th minutes both Hannah Fitzsimons and Eimear Brady registered their first scores of the day.

Cavan continued to press hard and get the win with a great turnover coming in the back line leading to a high ball into the hand of Emma Plunkett, she had the blinkers on and headed straight for goal, giving Cavan and essential confidence boost in the 33rd minute of play with a crucial goal.
