€560,000 for outdoor projects in County Cavan

Projects funded in Cavan and surrounding counties.

Killykeen Greenway, Crover Shore Lakeside and Slieve Rushen in Ballyconnell are set to benefit from funding announced earlier today.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, announced a €16.1 million investment in outdoor recreation projects right across the country.

A sum of €178,371 has been awarded for the Killykeen Greenway Phase II (Works at Killeshandra) which consists of improving access on the Killeshandra side for cyclists by creating a looped route.

A project to enhance Crover Shore Lakeside Access at Mountnugent got €180,417; while €180,000 has been awarded to develop an upland walkway on scenic Slieve Rushen in West Cavan.

With the Summer Season upon us, this investment from Minister Humphreys will see a huge investment in Outdoor Adventure Tourism in County Cavan.

In announcing the huge investment in outdoor projects, Minister Humphreys stated

“Our beautiful outdoors have never been more available to us than today. With the summer months upon us, now is the time to enjoy the wonderful amentities right on our doorstep.”

The investment announced, she said, further underpins the Government’s commitment to developing our outdoor amenities as part of ‘Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors’, the national outdoor recreation strategy.

Leitrim received €794,262, with the lion's share (€401,231) allocated to developing a new 960 metre trial in Drumshanbo, linking the Dowra Road to the Church Road and extended onto the Ballinamore Road.

Longford got €400,000, with €200,000 each to be spent on enhancing the existing Granard Greenway and constructing an new car park at the Moyne Amphitheatre and Legga Car Park.

Meath has received over €1m, €200,000 from which will be used to enhance the Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway; and Monaghan received €999,296.

Projects there include works as part of the Ballybay Wetlands Public Path Enhancement Plan (€198,833), €119,250 for the creation of a man-made beach along Gortnawhinny Lake Clones, €199,653 for the development of a rural walkway at Mullan Village, and €481,560 towards plans to build an 11km blueway along the Dromore River from Lough Major to Ballybay.

In Westmeath, which recieved €218,760, €106,360 has been allocated to The Lene Way Phase 2 project, which will see the extension of the pedestrian/ cycle link from the end of the existing path.

On the impact of today’s funding, Minister Humphreys stated: “This investment from my Department brings the overall allocation under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) to over €129 million since the Scheme was first launched in 2016.

“It is testament to the positive impact ‘Our Rural Future’ continues to have on communities all over Ireland and Government’s commitment to that policy.”
