Local TD highlights 'atrocious' state of Cavan roads

Cavan-Monaghan Sinn Féin TD, Deputy Pauline Tully has described the state of the roads in Co Cavan as “atrocious”. She has also raised the matter with the Tánaiste, Micheál Martin.

Speaking to the Anglo Celt, Deputy Tully said she recently brought up the issue of “the atrocious state of the rural road network all across County Cavan”. "I know County Cavan is not alone in experiencing this situation,” she continued.

“The roads nationwide need investment. However, counties like Cavan and Monaghan do not have a rail network and are dependent on the roads. I was informed by one of the engineers in the county that he had only received sufficient funding to repair 13km of a network of 1,000km of local roads.

"To maintain the roads, 80km to 100kms should be repaired each year so that the network can be addressed every ten years.” The local TD went on to say that the roads are so disintegrated in places “they have gone beyond patching”.

“We need an increase in funding this year and we also need a guarantee of sustained funding over a number of years so the local authorities can invest in staff and in contractors to carry out this work,” she concluded.
