Road safety concerns in Belturbet area
'People have to take ownership' of their driving behaviour - Cllr Fay
The speed at which motorists travel on approach roads into Belturbet town has been raised as a matter of concern.
Independent Brendan Fay said the areas were built up and, while he accepted that “people have to take ownership” of their driving behaviour, he asked if the council could intervene.
He highlighted specifically the area around Centra on Ernehill and the nearby Rory O’Moore’s GAA park; as well as the entrance to Turbet Island on the opposite side of town. There was one speed bump outside Centra, and speed cushions on the other side of town.
“There is going to be an accident,” warned Cllr Fay.
His motion was supported by his fellow cllrs. New speed signage was also sought at Tomena outside Bawnboy by MD Cathaoirleach and Fianna Fáil Cllr Áine Smith.
She mentioned that a lot of work is taking place with the Active Travel Scheme, yet still there is an issue with speeding vehicles coming into the village past St Mogue’s College and various busy junctions.
Her motion was supported by party colleague, John Paul Feeley.
Crossing issue
The need meanwhile to address pedestrian safety at the crossing from Tesco supermarket to the carpark in Cavan Town was also highlighted by Cllr Smith.
“Is it proper, and can it be raised?” she asked.
The motion was supported by Patricia Walsh (FF) who stated that the matter has been raised before.
Senior Area Engineer Paul Mulligan noted that the crossing was laid as part of the development of the supermarket. “We’ll have a look at it,” he assured.
