Bear necessities and more among Mee’s interiors sale

A full size stuffed brown bear, a statue of Venus, and a fabulous copper bath are amongst the eye catching lots from the catalogue of Victor Mee Auctions forthcoming online auction.

Taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17 and 18 the Cloverhill auntion house will host a decorative interiors sale featuring a catalogue of antiques, fine furnishings, artwork, carpets, and decorative interiors.

Amongst the decorative interior highlights are an early 19th C. French oak pantry cupboard (Lot 396), with an estimate of €1500 to €3000. A designer glass coffee table with polychrome wood and silver plate bird supports and mirrored platform base in the Hollywood Regency style (Lot 523) has a guide price of between €500 to €800. A 19th C. French copper bath (Lot 88) has an estimate of €600 to €1200. A rare early 19th C. French gilded bronze hall lantern with bow and swag decoration (Lot 100) has an estimate of €2000 to €4000. For an option which may be within the budgets of more people eying up an antique, check out Lot 4, a rare early 20th C. bronze luggage and coat rack with mirror, which has an estimate of €200 to €400.

Victor Mee has a well established reputation for rare taxidermy and this month’s catalogue maintains that form. Lot 632, a 19th Century full-size taxidermy brown bear is worth a visit to the Cloverhill auction house alone. Sure to spark conversations the bear comes with an estimated guide price of between €4000-€8000. In the same vein an impressive large taxidermy model of Eland bull head and shoulder (Lot 550), is expected to see the hammer fall somewhere between €1000 to €2000.

Under what is billed as ‘The Grand Tour Collection’ there’s a host of impressive lots: 20th C. Grand Tour plaster Grecian Urn on Pedestal (Lot 61); estimated €450 to €850; an early 20th C. Grand Tour plaster model of Sphinx (Lot 160), estimated €600 to €1200; a rare pair of early 20th C. Grand Tour carved plaster urns on pedestals (Lot 220), estimated €1200 to €1800; and finally a 19th C. French Parian ware statue of Venus (Lot 295), €1500 to €3000.

Viewing will take place at Victor Mee auction rooms in Cloverhill (H14D573) on Saturday April 13 from 12–5:50pm and on Sunday April 14 from 2-5.30pm.
