Cavan students to visit European Parliament
St Mogue's TY's travel to Strasbourg.
A Transition Year class from St Mogue's in Bawnboy has travelled to Strasbourg having won the opportunity to participate in the Euroscola programme.
The theme of the visit and the focus of the event is the question: 'A Europe of equal opportunities? The European Parliament's defence of women's rights and gender equality'.
Twenty-five students travelled with three teachers to the European capital earlier today (Wednesday), and will visit parliament tomorrow (Thursday) where they will receive a video address from Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, followed by a question and answer session with Dimitrios Papadimoulis, Vice-President of the European Parliament.
The Euroscola programme is an EU led decision-making simulation for secondary students, an immersive experience that takes place inside the European Parliament, one that offers the chance for young school goers from across Europe to become a Member of the European Parliament for a day in Strasbourg.
The meeting is taking place at the European Parliament buildings, which houses the hemicycle more generally used for plenary sessions, the largest of any European institution.
The morning sessions will also include an interview with Henry Wasung, Secretariat of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.
The afternoon will see the local students take part in a simulation of the work of Members of the European Parliament, with the specific focus of the debate being gender equality.
The day at parliament will conclude with an interactive workshop and debate on the upcoming European elections 2024.
