Older People's Council play to take to the stage
Creativity knows no age limit as Cavan's Ages and Stages showcases the talents of those from the older generation of Cavan.
A taste of wisdom and good Wit equal a recipe for a quality performance.
“Cavan people tend to have a sixth sense for bargains” is one of the many catchphrases used in the play.
The project started in February 2022 after a request made by the older people's council in Cavan.
Maura Williamson is the director of the project and spoke on when it began;
“We did a writing workshop two years before the request was made. We made a play”
The initial project created pre-pandemic was called “The best years of our lives are yet to come”
In January 2022 Maura was approached to do something similar, that would be directed towards the older people of Cavan. The beginning aim was to show creative writing and help find their voice.
The cast contains twelve members. Each member helps with the writing process and takes part in the acting process.
“It wasn't planned (for everyone to write and act) it just kind of fell that way,” said Maura.
The group contains ages varied from 55-80 as it is directed to the older people of Ireland.
The play was performed in November 2023 in Cavan's Town Hall.
The play is fun with comedy, but it contains some serious issues in it as well. The show lasts approximately an hour.
“It is all done in a very light-hearted manner, it's very enjoyable” commented Maura.
To get involved in the project you can contact the Cavan Age Friendly program through email or number.
The group performed in three different nursing homes over the past few days. Showcasing four scenes from the play.
“We were amazed by the response and the reaction,” said Maura.
The tour began on January 6th in Gallon ray and will continue up until April, with a show taking place on the 20th in Killashandra Community Centre.
Each show is at 8pm and ticket booking is through the County Council. The show is free but must be booked.
The activity is a great way to get those creative juices flowing and get you out of your comfort zone.
The project allows people to gain the full theatre experience of stage direction and production.
“The journey is extraordinary- you see the fear of performing disappearing” Maura stated on the development of the cast members.
“We are all going to die someday” is a sneak peak of one of the lines of the play.
With support from creative Ireland and Cavan creative the project would not have been possible.
