Killeshandra gets set for third annual Camino in June

Over 400 visitors from across the island expected in town

Killeshandra is this week preparing to host its third annual Camino following the launch of the 2024 event.

On June 15, 400 walkers from all over the country will gather at the Community Hall in the town and trek through the breathtaking drumlin landscapes of Co Cavan on either the 35.5km or 20km route. The choice is yours!

The 2024 route will take trekkers through the historic and beautiful Killegar estate, through the grounds of the old Convent where the Holy Rosary Missionary Sisters were founded in 1924, just outside Killeshandra - now owned by Lakeland Dairies - and then on to the idyllic Killykeen Forest Park.

As per previous years, there will be plenty of entertainment along the way with lots of rest stops and opportunities for chats, laughs and camaraderie. The very talented, Angela Cleary, a member of the Breffni Blues Special Olympics launched the Camino on Friday, March 15.

The Cavan bowler competed at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin in 2023 and placed third claiming a Bronze medal. Meanwhile, the idea for Killeshandra Camino Calling originated with a hard-working local committee who are passionate about walking and the benefits of walking.

The group is ardent in its belief that Killeshandra and the surrounding area has as much to offer walkers as any other destination in the country. The committee were determined to find ways to help rejuvenate businesses in the area and support the local economy through walking tourism.

Tickets are on sale presently on the Camino website www.killeshandracamino.ie To secure preferred time slot: Book early as there is limited availability.
