Over €18M for local and regional road projects in Cavan

2024 Road funding for Cavan revealed

Over €18.14M has been allocated to Cavan County Council for improving and maintaining roads across the county; with almost €17.06M granted for regional and local roads in neighbouring County Monaghan.

The figures were confirmed by the Department of Transport yesterday afternoon as part of a €658M package nationwide - up €32M on 2023.

Every local authority will see an increase in grants for restoration and improvement, with overall grant funding increasing by five per cent; although the impact of materials inflation may impact the number of projects that can be delivered.

Some of the headline figures in Cavan include €667,000 for bridge rehabilitation works, €300,000 for road safety schemes and €517,000 for climate change adaptation and resilience works.

A half a million euro has been earmarked for improvements to the Assan Bridge and road realignment (L3208).

The R935 has been awarded €250,000 for former national road rehabilitation works (formerly N55).

A further €100,000 has been allocated to the R188 Rathkenny East-West Road under the heading of strategic regional and local road projects.

Warm welcome

Local Fianna Fáil TDs Brendan Smith and Niamh Smyth both has welcomed the allocations for Cavan and Monaghan, as Senator Robbie Gallagher.

Deputy Brendan Smith said: "Maintaining and improving our road network is crucial to sustaining and developing our local economies across rural Ireland. These roads are imperative for children getting to school and people getting to work safely.''

Deputy Niamh Smyth also expressed her delight.

"This investment will allow us to repair, strengthen and maintain our roads across the region, ensuring they are fit for purpose. We are dedicating resources towards initiatives such as road repair, bridge rehabilitation, road safety measures, community engagement, drainage improvements, and climate change adaptation," she said.

Senator Robbie Gallagher emphasised the importance of this investment for rural regeneration and concluded by saying that the protection and renewal of the road network remains a key priority for Fianna Fáil in Government.
