Over €3.8M for Active Travel projects in Cavan

Loreto College initiative to benefit from over €900,000

There has been a warm welcome for the allocation of €3.825M to Active Travel Projects throughout County Cavan.

The funding and the successful projects were confirmed this afternoon by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys.

The investment will deliver a range of walking and cycling infrastructure projects, benefitting many communities.

The biggest beneficiary was Loreto College on the outskirts of Cavan Town, which is set to benefit from an Active Travel Scheme worth €911,000.

A quarter of a million, meanwhilw, as been emailed for a footpath link from Cavan Town to Farnham National School.

Other successful Cavan projects include:

· Cootehill Station Road Active Travel Scheme: €300,000

· Kingscourt Town Urban Greenway: €226,000

· St Aidan’s Secondary School in Cootehill: €225,000

· St Michael’s National School in Cootehill: €100,000

· Bus Station to Cavan Hospital Active Travel Scheme: €200,000

Other projects being supported include:

· Virginia-Rampart River Footbridge Active Travel Measures: €65,000

· Cavan Town Urban Greenway Phase 2: €80,000

· Ballyhaise Village Phase 1: €90,000

· Cavan Town Local Transport Plan: €100,000

· Shercock Town Active Travel Project: €120,000

Welcoming the funding, Minister Humphreys said:

“Supporting our cycling and walking infrastructure is more important than ever and I am so pleased to see so many worthy projects benefit from this initiative.

“From my own perspective as Minister for Rural and Community Development, I’ve ensured we have invested unprecedented amounts of funding into outdoor recreation."

The Cavan Monaghan Fine Gael TDalso expressed a hope that the investments will give people of all ages, particularly families, greater access to safe quality walking infrastructure.

“So with Spring now upon us, I’d encourage everyone to get out for a walk and cycle. and enjoy the great outdoors.”

Fianna Fáil's Niamh Smyth has also welcomed the news, including a further €3M for similar initiatives in neighbouring County Monaghan.

This funding will make our communities safer and more accessible for walkers and cyclists, and I am confident that these projects will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of our residents.
