Mullagh centenarian sadly passes

The death has occurred of Arthur Saunders at the age of 103. Henry Arthur Saunders, of Millstream, Mullagh, Co Cavan and formerly of London, England and Athlone, Co Westmeath, passed away at Cavan General Hospital on Thursday, December 28.
A native of Court Devenish, he attended the Athlone Technical School growing up, before working in the local Woollen Mills in his teens.
By 1941, Arthur emigrated to England, where he met his future wife, Teresa Clarke from Trim, Co Meath, in London in 1947.
They went on to have two daughters and a son - Ann, Pauline, and Derek.
Most of Arthur's career, some 33 years, was spent working on the railway network in London.
He retired in 1985, and moved back to Ireland with his wife approximately 20 years ago.
He was predeceased by his wife, Teresa, and lived in recent years with his daughter Ann, in Mullagh, Co Cavan.
Such was his popularity in his adopted area, Arthur was chosen to turn on the Christmas lights in the village in December 2019.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Teresa, his adored grandson Darren, beloved brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles and parents; Arthur is survived by his adored daughter Ann, son Derek, daughter Pauline, granddaughters Julie and Donna, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
