First look at new sports campus design

Cavan County Council has released images showing architectural renderings for its new multi-million euro sports campus planned for Cavan Town.

The Regional Sports Complex project last week received a €200,000 “top up” towards the ongoing design of the landmark project.

The funding has been secured from the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) .

The first allocations from the fund were announced in January 2020 when the Regional Sports Campus project received €837,680.

To date, over €1M has been allocated to progress the centre, which is being developed by Cavan County Council in conjunction with project partners Cavan GAA and the Royal School on a site adjacent to Kingspan Breffni.

A spokesperson for the council informed the Celt: “The project is currently in the detailed design phase.”

It’s estimated the sports campus plan could cost as much as €30M once the vision is fully realised.

Last year the tenders were issued for a consultancy team to lead the design of the new state-of-the-art, multi-sports facility, which is to be delivered on a phased basis in conjunction with the development of a centre of excellence at Kingspan Breffni Park by Cavan GAA.

Similar in scale to the hugely successful Erne East Peace Link facility in Clones, the Cavan multi-sports facility will include 4G pitches for Gaelic football, soccer and rugby; playing areas for basketball and hockey; and facilities for badminton and tennis, as well as athletics.

There are also plans to build a competitive-sized swimming pool on site at a later stage.

The Ministers also confirmed that a new round of the Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund will open for applications in the first half of 2024.

For the first time, it will be a requirement for all successful applicants to publish their Similar Access Policies, in respect of men and women having access to the facilities on similar terms, in order to be eligible for a “top-up” allocation draw down.

Commenting on the announcement Minister Catherine Martin said: “It is vitally important that we have sporting facilities like these so that people of all ages and abilities can benefit from their use.”
