Big years coming - Cllr Fay
Belturbet Masterplan consultation nears completion.
With the Belturbet Masterplan consultation process completed and consultant architect Frank Cooney now finalising the report, Independent Cllr Brendan Fay has high hopes for the coming years for the Erneside town.
Cllr Fay hints there is “plenty in the pipeline” for locals to be very excited about going forward. “There are a number of legacy projects, big things happening that I feel, when delivered, will be very important for the future of Belturbet,” says Cllr Fay.
He highlighted major investment already taking place in the town, for example, Cavan County Council securing funding of €115,000 in respect of Belturbet Playground under the Community Recognition Fund 2023.
The money will facilitate major upgrade works to the playground, including the replacement of existing equipment, installation of a new inclusive play and sensory equipment, and an upgrade of the surfacing.
“Works will commence on the playground over the coming months,” revealed Cllr Fay, who commended the work of both council officials and locals for pushing the project forward.
Cllr Fay also welcomed the proposed delivery of new housing in the town.
Close to €1 million will be spent on converting the former Duckin’ Stool pub into three apartments, providing much needed social housing and helping to revitalise the town core.
The construction and design work are being undertaken by local Cavan contractors, JJ McCauley Wynne, and was designed by Gormley Gilsenan architects.
The council is also working on plans to develop Widow’s Row Belturbet to provide a social housing development, which will comprise seven two-bed semi-detached dwellings of various designs; and one three-unit, one-bed, three-storey dwelling.
“There is a lot to be positive about in Belturbet, and also in neighbouring towns as well. I must welcome the provision of additional accommodation at St Bricin’s. It shows how far the school has come, and also ongoing plans to provide new school accommodation at St Mogue’s in Bawnboy as well.
“It is wonderful to see the schools doing so well, and bodes very well for the future for both areas. I was very happy as well to see the opening of the Community Health Centre in Killeshandra. It was an important project, and I am delighted to finally see it open,” concluded Cllr Fay.
