Sushi and Cavan are not usually two words you will hear in the same sentence but the combination proved a major hit for one enterprising Cavan couple.

Jolita Puksmiene and Baz Wiebenga established Sushi-Mania in 2021. Since then, the much-loved local business has become highly regarded for its fresh produce, good quality and unique flavours. Sushi-Mania started out as a cottage industry providing home deliveries. Then they set up stalls at farmers markets and food festivals, before taking the plunge a year ago and opening their retail outlet Sushi-Mania Kitchen along Virginia’s Main Street.

Sushi-Mania operates with a team of eight people and is providing fresh, high-quality products with locally sourced ingredients to its customers. The business continues to pride itself on that ‘personal touch’ when it comes to customer service.

Jolita says that the best business advice, she has found, is to stick with organically produced ingredients.

“Don’t miss the steps and don’t jump high too soon,” she added.

“Sushi-Mania was a unique idea that has never been seen in the Irish market and key to it all was our local producers. People said sushi in Cavan would never work and, while we started off very small, it did work and we did succeed. We are very proud to say that Sushi-Mania comes from Cavan.”

Sadly Bas passed away unexpectedly last October but Jolita is carrying on the business they started together in his memory.

As demand grows, the plan for Sushi-Mania is to continue to grow in tandem. “As Bas always said ‘Subway opened with only one store too’,” concluded Jolita.
