Monaghan mechanic tops latest defaulters list
Cavan men fined for misuse of marked oil and possession of untaxed tobacco.
A motor mechanic in Monaghan who owes a total of €1.86 million topped the list of tax defaulters published by the Revenue Commissioners.
Eamonn Galligan, a mechanic of Drumass, Inniskeen owes €712,000 in tax to the State, and interest of €446,000 and penalties of €705,000.
None of the money owed has yet been paid to Revenue.
Revenue say the 24 settlement cases in the third quarter of 2023 (July to September) amounted to a total of €9.6m.
Of those, 22 cases exceeded €100,000 and two were for more than €1m.
Revenue says of the settlement cases published on Tuesday, some €3.7m remains unpaid.
“Revenue vigorously pursues collection/enforcement on unpaid settlements,” a spokesperson said in a statement, noting that in cases where a company goes bust it may not be possible to recover the full amount.
During Q3 2023 there were a further 17 cases of failing to file income tax returns and two cases of the incorrect delivery of VAT returns. Fines totalling just over €58,000 were levied in respect of those cases.
There were also 23 cases of excise offences for tobacco smuggling, illegal selling of tobacco and possession of untaxed tobacco for sale, and 20 cases of the misuse of marked mineral oil.
They attracted fines totalling €69,000.
Martin Nathan Mongan of Station Lane, Cavan, was fined €2,500 for misuse of marked mineral oil.
Vitalijis Logins of Cluain Aoibhinn meanwhile was fined €2,500 for possession of untaxed tobacco products.
