Road safety issues at Loreto College

Concerns about road safety around Loreto College were raised at the November meeting of the Cavan Belturbet Municipal District.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Áine Smith told the group that it is very dangerous for anyone turning into the school from both directions.

She stated there is “very little room to turn” when coming from the Butlersbridge road.

Cllr Smith also explained that many motorists experience a lot of delays there due to traffic and she is “eager to see anything done to ease the dangers”.

Councillors Peter McVitty (FG), Madeleine Argue (FG) and Brendan Fay (Ind) all supported the motion.

In response, Senior Executive Engineer Paul Mulligan told the group he would get the road assessed.

However, he pointed out that if it is “easier to turn”, it could “increase the speed” at which people drive.

Director of Services Brendan Jennings agreed.

The group queried the possibility of a partnership with Loreto College to remedy the issue.

Mr Jennings told the group “a lot has been done” to that specific area of road already and conditions “should be better” than they were previously.

This include road crossings and footpaths, which have facilitated more students to walk and cycle to school.

Cllr Smith queried if start times for the school children could be staggered to reduce the number of cars at the school at one time.

She highlighted how the road is on the hospital route and ambulances are at risk of being held up due to the traffic.

“If an ambulance wanted to get through, it wouldn’t get through,” said Cllr Smith.

The executives agreed to assess the area under the Active Travel Scheme.
