Call for road safety measures at Tullyvin
Cavan County Council is being urged to do something to improve road safety at a “lethal” area in Tullyvin.
Fine Gael Councillor Carmel Brady raised the issue at the October meeting of the Bailieborough Cootehill Municipal District.
She explained there are problems with speeding in the area and called for safety measures to be put in place at the junction in the village. A 60km/h speed limit applies at the location, which Cllr Brady believes is too fast.
The local representative highlighted how there is a factory on one side of the road, which employees 100 people; and two childcare facilities on the opposite side, which care for over 100 children between them.
Cllr Brady further explained there is a “very very narrow bridge” in the area as well.
Previously there had been a sign highlighting the bridge. However the Fine Gael representative said it was “hit by a car and never replaced”.
“I live on the other side of the bridge and it is lethal. Some engineers need to scratch their head,” she concluded, requesting something be done to improve road safety in the area.
Acting senior executive engineer, Clinton Mulligan, said, due to the fact the speed limit is 60km/h, the council would not be permitted to install a speed ramp at the location.
He said that a safety report had been conducted on the road, which found not many collisions had been reported in the area.
Asked about the potential to develop turning bays, the councillors were told this would not be possible.
