Mystery of flooding at Town Lake

Mysterious problems with flooding at the Town Lake in Bailieborough were raised at a recent meeting of the Bailieborough Cootehill Municipal District. Sinn Féin councillor Paddy McDonald flagged the issue as an “ongoing problem”.

Each year, when the rain gets heavier, the lake experiences flooding and Cllr McDonald wondered “who’s responsible” for fixing the issue, the “Fisheries or the OPW”?

In response, acting senior executive engineer, Clinton Mulligan, said that the surrounding of a lake is a “designated flood zone”.

He said there was “no money available” to investigate the issue at present.

Senior engineer John McKernan added: “At the moment we don’t know what the cause of the problem is."

The issue had been raised at a previous meeting when Cllr McDonald was told the lake would not dry up enough to allow a camera to investigate the problem.

The executive agreed to “look at it" again and "talk to someone” to find a way of resolving the issue.
