Laragh camógs open their account with win over Lacken

Senior Camogie Championship

Laragh 2-8

Lacken 2-6

On Wednesday last in PJ Duke Park, Stradone Laragh and last year’s intermediate winners Lacken battled it out. Lacken were first to get their names on the score board with a long range point after a high tackle on county star Rosie Crowe McKeever.

Both teams battled hard in the middle half of the field with an excellent display of hooks, blocks and battles.

Free taker Clodagh Keenaghan showed why she’s one of the best free takers in the county with two long-range frees sent over the bar. Fourteen minutes into this clash, Laragh’s Debra Smith found herself in the scoring zone and sent the sliotar past goalkeeper Michelle Ellis.

Lacken retaliated in the 19th minute with a super goal from play coming from Joanne Moore.

At the launch of the Elegant Gems Junior Championship were (back, from left): Geraldine Mulvaney (Castletara), Codi Shalvey (Drumgoon), Leanne Conaty (Denn). Front: Fiona Crowe (Lacken) and Clare O'Reilly (Crosserlough).

Throughout the final moments of this half both sides battled hard, and both missed opportunities to get scores on the board. At the break Laragh lead 1-4 to Lacken’s 1-1.

Laragh were first to make their mark in the second half with Aislinn Keenaghan got her first score with a point from play.

Lacken started to dominate this half more with a flurry of scores coming from Eimear Brady and Aoife Crowe. Joanne Moore made her presence very much felt on the field as she got her second goal of the day.

Laragh’s defence didn’t give up easily as they applied the pressure and turned over balls, getting them up the field to Niamh Keenaghan where she secured Laragh’s second goal of the day. Lacken ended the game with a point from Eimear in the 35th minute of the second half.

At the launch of the Elegant Gems Intermediate Championship were (from left): Emer Fitzpatrick (Kill), Reanne Dourneen (Ballinagh), Ana Sheanon (Drumgoon) and Abby Fitzpatrick (Kill).
