Shercock Credit Union to merge with Castleblaney
Established in 1987 Shercock Credit Union will be merging with Castleblaney to provide more facilities for its members.
After a meeting, which took place last Monday night (August 14), the decision to merge won a majority vote of 86% with Castleblaney accepting the proposal. It means Shercock will become a branch of Castleblaney Credit Union.
A majority of at least 75% was needed to see the change, which is expected to take effect on September 11.
The move will see a greater variety of facilities for customers including current accounts, online banking services and the credit union mobile app.
“We’re merging for the simple fact that we want more services for our members,” manager Breda McCabe explained.
She assured customers that the “lovely” office in Shercock will remain open.
“We have been guaranteed that the office will stay open at the times and dates that we are open and the staff will be retained.
“Our asset size will be a combined €76 million, at the minute we’re only a €15 million credit union.
“It’s the new services though that’s making all the difference,” she said.
Ms McCabe assures it will be great for existing and new members.
“People were very happy with it because they do want new services, especially in the younger age group.
“They expect that and we would never be in a position to offer current accounts because there’s an awful lot of investment and IT.”
Serving as manager for 11 years and previously treasurer for 25 years, Ms McCabe is delighted with the decision. However she will not be working in the new branch.
“I am past retirement age so I will be retiring. I won't go forward to the new entity,” she revealed, adding that she will be finished up on September 8.
“It’s a small community and we know everybody that comes in. It was just a great time here and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it and I will be sorry to leave but, at the same time, it needs younger blood.
“It will get that in the new manager in Castleblaney,” she said, describing Patrick Conlon as a “lovely man” who is “well capable of running the entity".
