Championship in full swing

GAA news

Championship action continues this weekend with the Senior Championship throwing in tomorrow (Thursday) as champions Gowna meet neighbours Lacken at Kingspan Breffni.

While the holders have had injury concerns this year, they are fancied to give the championship a strong rattle and are warm favourites against the Celtics, who stayed in Division 1 in a relegation play-off after a late upturn in form.

On Friday there is a clash of two of the last three intermediate champions as Castlerahan take on Ballinagh. The teams had almost identical records in the league with Castlerahan winning their head-to-head meeting by a point and Brian Donohoe’s side go in as slight favourites here.

There are two Senior Championship matches down for decision on Saturday. In Virginia, old rivals Cavan Gaels and Kingscourt meet in a game which should draw a good crowd.

Having reached the league final, the Stars will be hopeful of repeating their 2020 SFC semi-final win over their Cavan Town rivals, for whom key man Gearoid McKiernan is rated as doubtful.

Neighbours Laragh and Lavey face off at HQ in what should be a tasty clash, with Killygarry and Mullahoran meeting on Sunday in Lacken.

The tie of the round is Sunday evening at Kingspan Breffni as 2020 champions Crosserlough take on 2021 winners Ramor United. Jimmy Higgins’s men are the only unbeaten team in the county this year and have been installed as slight championship favourites by the bookmakers but there is usually very little between these leading sides when they meet.

Outside of senior, the Cuchulainns v Ballyhaise game on Saturday evening in round two of the Intermediate Championship has the potential to be a cracker. There is also a round of JFC matches.

Meanwhile, interviews for the vacant Cavan senior team manager’s position are due to take place next Monday (August 21).
