Over €18k cannabis seized following forced stop
Post Bank Holiday roadside tests carried out.
When gardaí opened the boot of a car driven by a person who had attempted to evade a checkpoint they discovered more than €18,000 worth of cannabis.
In a follow up search of a property conducted by Detective Branch members attached to Bailieboro another quantity of cannabis was discovered.
The incident occurred in the past week when members of the Cavan Roads Policing Unit were performing a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoint in the Virginia area.
After the car in question made an attempt to avoid the checkpoint, gardaí tested the driver who subsequently failed a roadside drug test- testing positive for cocaine.
A search of the vehicle revealed an estimated €18,500 worth of cannabis.
It also transpired that the driver was driving without insurance, and the car they were travelling in was taken off the road.
The driver has since appeared in the Distrct Court charged with drug related offences.
On Tuesday last meanwhile, after the August Bank Holiday Weekend, members of the Cavan Roads Policing Unit commenced an operation at 4:30am on the N3.
A number of drivers were detected travelling well in excess of the speed limit and received Fixed Payment Notices.
A joint checkpoint was also conducted with the RSA where a number of HGVs were not allowed to continue their journeys due to major defects and driver driving hour infringements.
One driver was arrested after failing a roadside drug test.
