Fibre broadband works progress across county
Almost 1,400 more homes, farms and businesses near Killeshandra and Arva will soon have access to high-speed, fibre-optic broadband as the rollout of the national broadband project continues apace.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new network, announced last week that construction has commenced to deliver the service to almost 600 properties near Arvagh. Additionally, engineering surveying works for almost 800 premises in rural areas near Killeshandra have been completed.
In Cavan, there are approximately 17,000 premises in the Intervention Area, which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses, and schools. Under the National Broadband Plan, Cavan will see an investment of €65M in the new high-speed fibre network. It’s hoped this will better enable e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, better energy efficiency in the home, and facilitate increased levels of remote working.
NBI crews have made substantial progress in County Cavan, where 578 premises near Arvagh in its Aughnacliffe deployment area have commenced construction works; while 787 premises near Killeshandra in NBI’s Carrigallen deployment area.
Already, there are 4,050 homes, businesses, and farms in County Cavan that can order or pre-order high-speed, reliable broadband, with 1,379 connections already made to the network. National Broadband Ireland is calling on people living in the Breffni county to visit nbi.ie/map/ and enter their Eircode to see if they are ready to connect.
NBI Chief Executive, Peter Hendrick, said teams are working “tirelessly” on the rollout plan and “considerable progress” has been made in Cavan.
“As the fast pace of the rollout continues, we are confident in our expertise to progress premises from the construction phase to the order phase. We are currently partnering with retail service providers, and other stakeholders, to connect homes in Cavan.”
NBI is promising that minimum download speeds of 500Mbps will be available.
“Our goal is to improve digital connectivity across the country. Digital connectivity has become a huge part of our everyday lives, and this new Fibre-to-the-Home network, will be a key enabler for the sustainability of local businesses and communities,” said Mr Hendrick.
Broadband Connection Points
In advance of the fibre-to-the-home rollout, the NBP provides for the delivery of Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) nationwide. 602 of these sites, including Public BCPs, are now ‘live’. Public BCPs – which include sports clubs, community centres and tourist sites – provide free public access to high-speed internet in the rollout area. Other BCP categories include schools and marts.
An example of some of the locations of Broadband Connection Points in Cavan include Gallonray House, Killinkere Leisure Centre, and Glengevlan Community Hall. Primary schools in the Intervention Area are also being connected for educational access as part of the NBP.
