Cavan U16's win thrilling All Ireland replay
History makers- first All Ireland win for county since 1977.
🟦⬜️ Cavan: 2-13(19)
🟥⬜️ Cork: 1-13(16)
Cavan won the All-Ireland U16 A Final Replay with an impressive victory over a dogged Cork side, lifting the title for the first time in almost 50 years.
Cavan won the A title for just the second time in their history with this win at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick 2-13 (19) to 1-13 (16).
The last time and only other time the county lifted the title was in 1977.
The first time these two sides faced off at Bretland Park, Clara, Offaly, ended in a pulsating draw (1-9 to 0-12), where five minutes from time and three points behind, Cavan's Kate Fegan popped up with the game’s only goal.
Here in Limerick Cavan got off to a blistering start scoring two goals in just 11 minutes- Ella Sheridan ('9), and Lauren Miney ('11)- but Cork knuckled down and composed themselves to pull ahead with Eabha O'Donovan in sensational form throughout.
It meant Cavan went into the halftime break behind (Cavan: 2-2 Cork: 1-9).
Cavan though remained in touching distance and the game turned on a pivotal moment in the Cavan box.
At 21 minutes into the second half, and Cavan a point behind, Player of the Match winner Fainche Higgins pulled off an incredible double save, the first from a penalty.
It gave the blue and whites the impetus to push forward with determination, and Cavan tied the match before seeing out the game with three crucial scores in a row from Mia Lynch.
A homecoming is being held at the ‘County Bridge’ outside Granard later tonight.
