‘Near misses’ on the N87
Cavan County Council has once again promised to “follow up” on concerns about the junction at Killynagher on the N87 between Belturbet and Ballyconnell.
It is the second time in as many years that the issue had been highlighted at a meeting of councillors elected to the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District area. Independent Brendan Fay told the meeting that he was getting “now near weekly [representations]” from members of the public highlighting “near misses”.
He himself had visited the junction and reported “you’re nearly out on the road before you get a good view” exiting from side roads.
Fine Gael’s Peter McVitty stated that the need for intervention at the site was “urgent”, and said that improvements implemented in recent years had failed to address the problem.
He asked too if any movement had been made with regard to installing flashing lights on approach to warn motorists.
There was support too for the motion from Áine Smith and Patricia Walsh (FF).
However senior engineer for the area, Paul Mulligan, said that the solution would require a “big ask”. The matter had previously been referred to the council's road design section and he said that warning lights would become “ineffective” over time.
School road safety
In Cavan Town, meanwhile, Cllrs appealed for road safety measures outside St Feilm’s NS on the Farnham Road.
It was stated by Cllr Walsh (FF) that September is coming “very quick” and the council executive was asked to engage with gardaí and the school over potential solutions.
