Former Celt correspondent passes away

Peter Brady RIP

It is with a deep sadness that we learned of the death of Peter Brady from Kilnaleck yesterday (Wednesday), July 5, following a long illness.

Peter was the Kilnaleck correspondent for The Anglo-Celt for many years - his daughter Ruth having taken on the role in recent years.

He was also a regular columnist and contributor to this newspaper - his popular 'A Rural View' weekly column tackling many rural issues head on up until his retirement.

Peter was a strong campaigner for rural Ireland and promoted the Irish culture and language. He produced and presented a popular weekly radio programme on Shannonside Northern Sound 'Gaeilge go Leor'. He was also chairman of the board of the local radio station for a number of years prior to its acquisition by Radio Kerry.

He was also hugely interested and involved in the GAA. His long distinguished involvement with Cavan GAA saw him serve terms as Vice Chairman in 1985 and 1986 and chairman from 1987 to 1992.

Peter was also actively involved with his local club, Ballymachugh. He played with the club when he was young and later became involved in administration in an unofficial capacity, helping to translate players' names into Irish.

He rose through the ranks, from assistant secretary of his club to county board delegate to chairman of the county board.

He was also on numerous Croke Park committees and later worked on the development of hurling in Cavan.

Peter will repose at 'Lár Na Páirce', Lavagh, Kilnaleck (A82 N2H3) from 12 noon to 5pm today (Thursday) followed by removal to St Patrick's Church, Kilnaleck (A82 K023) arriving at 6.30pm.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow (Friday) at 12 noon with burial afterwards in St Mary's Cemetery, Ballinarry (A82 Y825).

Family flowers only please, donations in lieu, if desired, to the Cavan Alzheimer's Society c/o Briody's Funeral Home, Kilnaleck.

Peter was predeceased by his wife Mella. He will be sadly missed by his daughters Catherine (Vincent) and Ruth (Matthew), son Eamon (Shari), sister Betty (Bill), brother Paddy (Eileen), grandchildren - Kate, Maria, Darragh, Emer, Mella, Íosa and Javed; nieces, nephews, Mary & Felipe Mendez-Downes, extended family, neighbours and friends.
