Philip Brady to be next council Cathaoirleach

Follows in the footsteps of his father Danny Brady, and his late aunt, Veronica Sharkey.

Mullahoran’s Philip Brady is set to be elected as the county’s next first citizen.

The Fianna Fail councillor will received the chain of office at the council’s AGM which is set to take place at Cavan Courthouse later this afternoon.

Cllr Brady follows in the footsteps of his father Danny Brady, and his late aunt, Veronica Sharkey.

Both previously served as Cathaoirleach.

Cllr Brady takes over the role from his party colleague, John Paul Feeley, who like his successor continued the proud legacy of his own late father Eddie Feeley, first elected to Cavan County Council in 1985, and who served twice as Cathoirleach (1996-97/ 2005-06).

Cllr Brady was first elected to Cavan County Council in the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District Area in 2014, and re-elected in 2019.

He will be supported in his role by Fine Gael’s Carmel Brady who will be elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach.

Cllr Brady, who is presently the Chair of Cavan-Monaghan Education and Training Board, was similarly first elected to the council back in 2014, and likewise was re-elected in the Bailieborough-Cootehill MD in 2019.

She served as Leas-Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council for 2017-2018.

Their appointments follows an agreement initially struck after Fianna Fail secured the majority of seats in 2019, at which they held onto four chairmanships and four vice chairmanships at county council level.

The remaining positions went to Aontú’s Sarah O’Reilly, who served as Cathaoirelach in 2020-21, and one vice-chair also offered to Fine Gael.
