Over 1.2 Million smart electricity meters now installed across Ireland
In supporting Ireland’s transition to a clean electric future, ESB Networks is continuing to roll out the National Smart Metering Programme by replacing existing electricity meters in homes, farms and businesses across the country with next generation smart meters.
This upgrade is a like-for-like exchange with your old meter and there is no change to your electricity price plan, following the installation of a smart meter.
Smart meters will help to transform how electricity consumption is measured and managed, by providing customers with greater insights into their consumption, which they can use to make informed choices about their electricity usage.
ESB Networks’ deployment of smart meters began in autumn 2019, and the rollout is being carried out on an area-by-area basis.
We notify customers in each area in advance of deployment, and over 1.2 million smart meters have already been installed across Ireland, including over 28,000 households in counties Cavan and Monaghan.
Smart meters are read automatically, resulting in more accurate bills, without the need for estimated or manual readings. They also allow electricity customers to see a detailed breakdown of their electricity usage through the ESB Networks Online Customer Portal, which can be accessed at www. esbnetworks.ie.
This information can help customers consider the new range of smart services and price plans being offered by electricity suppliers as they consider the best ways to manage their electricity usage.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and electricity suppliers.
