Killeshandra Camino is Calling You
The second annual Killeshandra Camino will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023.
Inspired by the many pilgrim routes all over Europe, walkers will take on the 35.5km lake-dotted trail, around the village of Killeshandra, County Cavan.
The event was launched last Sunday, March 19, by Aisha Gannon, Killeshandra’s Cyclocross National Champion 2022. Camino PRO Tara Ní Dholáin is encouraging walkers of all abilities to register: "Last year’s event was very successful with walkers, groups of friends and walking clubs coming from miles around to challenge themselves, enjoy the camaraderie of a long-distance walk and to experience and enjoy the beauty of the landscapes around this area. We are looking forward to welcoming walkers to Killeshandra once again in June."
The Killeshandra Camino is organised by the local community and all proceeds go towards community projects.
This long-distance walk, which captivated 400 walkers in 2022, will once again showcase some of the country’s most beautiful natural ways through forests, along glistening lakes and blossoming greenways.
Killeshandra is located in the beautiful Cavan Lakelands, in the heart of the UNESCO Cuilcagh Lakelands Global Geopark, famous for rugged uplands, lakes, forests and gently rolling drumlins.
Joanne Hayes, Cavan Tourism Officer, is delighted to see the Camino happening again in 2023. "Events such as Killeshandra Camino Calling have the potential to really benefit rural economies, attracting visitors to explore and stay in the locality," she said.
A ticket for the Camino costs €40 and includes a meal, treats and plenty of welcome surprises along the route. Last year’s Camino sold out quickly and the same demand is expected this year. Walkers can complete the Killeshandra Camino in their own time. It is as much about the camaraderie along the way as it is about the challenge and sense of achievement.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh. Mar a deir an seanfhocal, ‘Faigheann cos ar siúl rud nach bhfaigheann cos ina cónaí’ (a walking foot comes upon something that a resting foot wouldn’t).
Bígí linn!
