Weather plays havoc with local sporting fixtures
Snowfall renders pitches unplayable
The weather has played havoc with sporting fixtures across the county today.
Cavan hurlers’ crunch National League clash against Leitrim, which was fixed for Kingspan Breffni at 2pm this afternoon was called off after a pitch inspection by local referee Noel Mooney (see photo) at 10.30am.
That game has now been pencilled in for 2pm tomorrow at the same venue.
The Cavan senior camogie team’s National League fixture against Meath, which had been down for decision at 2pm this afternoon at St Matthew’s Park, Crosskeys also fell victim to the weather, with heavy snowfall on Thursday night and a frost last night rendering pitches unplayable.
The Cavan minor footballers’ match against Fermanagh in the Jim McGuigan Cup, pencilled in for noon today, has also been postponed.
One sport which did go ahead this afternoon was handball. At the All-Ireland Masters semi-finals, Kingscourt clubman Gary Byrne advanced to the All-Ireland final with a gutsy tiebreaker win over Clare.
Out of luck were James Brady, Eddie Halligan and Vincent Mulvey.
