Cavan has fifth lowest rate of LIS road fixes

Cavan had the fifth lowest number of rural roads and laneways repaired under Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) over the last five years.

Since 2017, Cavan County Council has completed repairs to 77 laneways, ahead of Kildare (46), Louth (52), Wicklow (60), and Waterford (70).

According to the comprehensive countrywide figures released by Minister Heather Humphrey’s Department for Rural and Community Development, local authorities in neighbouring counties such as Monaghan (115), Leitrim (112), Longford (98), and Meath (86) managed to repair more rural roads and cul de sacs.

Last year (2022) was however Cavan’s best year for fixing rural roads, with works completed on 25 at a cost of €1,273,457. This compared to 22 roads fixed in 2021, four each in 2020 and 2019, 12 in 2018, and 10 in 2017.

The LIS was reinvigorated in 2017 following a number of years with no dedicated funding.

Since 2017 almost €114 million has been allocated to the scheme.

Last month it was announced that Cavan County Council would receive €336,913 towards rural road and laneway improvements.

There are close to 200 outstanding LIS applications currently on the council’s books.
