Confident Cavan U12s dominate Navan
Facing what had appeared like a difficult opponent in Navan's U12s, the Cavan outfit made light work of the task with many of the squad registering on the scoreboard.
Cavan were coming off the back of a big win last weekend against Enniskillen and confidence was running high in this tight knit group.
Navan brought a large squad to Swellan Park on Saturday morning, with a few very big units. With Cavan missing some key players due to injury and sickness, they were determined to bring their A game for this encounter. And they did just that right from the off.
The kick-off saw a high ball sent into the Cavan backs which was dealt with by Killian Smith. He shifted the ball out to Daniel King who then passed to Cavan’s full back James Finlay who burst through a few Navan defenders and ran 30 metres for Cavan’s first try.
Finlay helped himself to another try in the second half with a blistering run almost the full length of the pitch.
Cavan were solid at the back and the next try came off a training ground move where a few Cavan players stood right of a Cavan scrum only to switch at the last minute to the opposite side. Max Hanley had a great day at scrum half and he popped a pass out to out half William Woods who found the space and ran in the second try.
Woods got another in the second half to keep Cavan in front. Eoghan McGovern put in a great shift in the front row and he picked up a ball 10 metres out from the try line, spun out of a tackle and scored in the corner.
Ballyhaise man Patrick Geraty had a great day in the engine room bulldozing through tackles before offloading to James Richardson for a super first half try. Geraty also scored two second half tries himself.
Lavey man Killian Smyth put in a few mammoth carries and also dotted down for two first half tries.
One of the best parts to Cavan’s game on was their ruck clear outs managed by the trio of Jack Tracey, John McCarren and Richard Burke. They were super-efficient at the breakdown and ensured Max Hanley could get quick ball out to the backs at every ruck.
Emmet Corkey had a great game at centre and he ducked and weaved his way through the Navan defence to score two tries. Ethan Black was lightning on the wing with some great runs up field. Daniel King and Kyle Reilly also played a huge role in gaining Cavan territory in both halves.
It finished with a convincing win for Cavan who now turn their thoughts to the next home game against Armagh, one of the best teams in Ulster at the moment.
