Over 300 Ukrainian children enrolled in Cavan primary and secondary schools
More than 300 Ukrainian children have been accommodated in primary and post-primary schools in Cavan to date.
The figure includes 213 children under the age of 12 enrolled in primary schools across the county, and 87 attending secondary level.
The Department of Education figure is valid as of December 22 last.
In total 13,753 Ukrainian pupils have been enrolled in schools across Ireland. Out of that figure, 8,823 of these pupils have been accommodated in primary schools with 4,930 pupils enrolled in post-primary schools.
By comparison to Cavan, elsewhere in the region there are 191 enrolled at primary level in Leitrim, and 110 in secondary; Longford 57/56; Monaghan 56/25; and Meath 270/115.
To assist with the transition of Ukrainian students and their families into Irish schools Regional Education and Language Teams (REALT) continue to operate, hosted by the 16 regional education and training boards around Ireland. This is staffed by regionally-based education support personnel.
“These teams are ensuring that clear, accessible information flows are in place between schools, local education support services and national support structures in relation to people arriving from Ukraine,” explained the Department of Education, which has committed to publishing figures on the enrolment of Ukrainian children each month.
Work meanwhile continues on a project to provide 30 rapid build homes for Ukrainian families fleeing the invasion by Russian at a site near Cavan Town.
Construction at the State-owned greenfield site on Farnham Road, next to Drumnavanagh, and once earmarked for the Department of the Marine during the failed decentralisation plan, began late last month.
More than 100 refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be accommodated once construction is completed.
