FESTIVE Events raises tens of thousands for charity

Tens of thousands of euros of have been raised for local charities at events taking place over the festive period.

Funds that will go directly towards helping vulnerable communities were collected across the county in recent days, with more events planned into the New Year.

St Christopher’s Hospice in Cavan was the prime beneficiary of a ‘Big Sing Song’ and ‘Monster Raffle’ at McSeain’s in Cornafean on Christmas Eve, before dozens turned out to take part in the Cavan Icebreakers' 53rd annual swim at Annagh Lake on Christmas morning in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA).

It was one of several such swims, with others at Lavey (10th Annual) in support of Lavey Ladies GAA and Lavey’s Community First Responders; in Bailieborough for MS Cavan; and at Lough Ramor and Lough Sheelin.

On St Stephen's Day more close to 500 turned out to take part in the ever popular Cavan Christmas Dash, with monies raised going to CUAN Cancer Care and Cavan Alzheimer Society.

The annual Adrian Donohue Memorial 5km walk/run took place at Crosserlough GAA Grounds with proceeds going towards CAPS, and Bailieborough Athletic Club held their own 5k/10k event, again with all monies raised going to benefit local charities.

In Drung, The Stray Sod hosted a tractor and bike run in aid of CAPS and Drumlin House.

The 20th annual Christmas Fundraising Gala in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice, meanwhile, will take place at the Lavey Inn tomorrow night (Thursday), December 29.
