Meet the Flynnstone!
Ballinagh teen to compete in Junior World Darts Championship
A Leaving Certificate Student is set to close his books next week to represent Ireland in the World Championship of darts.
David “Flynnstone” Flynn (17) is set to take part in the 2022 Junior Darts Corporation (JDC) World Championships. The competition will take place in Gibraltar from November 21-25.
“It feels amazing to have qualified to represent my country on the world stage, it’s a real honour and dream come true,” says David, excited about his upcoming international debut.
“I will be competing in five different events. Four single events and one team event.”
The Ballinagh lad first began playing darts in 2020 during lockdown and quickly fell in love with the sport.
“I started playing darts during the first lockdown in April 2020 and straight away I was hooked. I can’t get enough of it,” he continued. He joined his closest team, Athlone Youth Academy, which helped him to perfect his skills.
“This will be my first Junior World Championships. During lockdown I competed in some online events. My first competition was playing in the All Irelands, which was a brilliant experience. I got my first win last year in the West Coast Challenge in Galway and my team, Athlone Youth Academy, finished runners up in our last team event in Portarlington.”
New to the international scene, David has his sights set on victory.
“I believe I have the ability to win, I have put the hours of training in, but I also know how difficult it is going to be. I will be competing against the very best young players from all over the world so I really am going to have to be at my best.”
David is looking forward to his upcoming event and is thankful to everyone who has supported him so far, especially his mother Laura and step dad Stephen.
“I would like to thank my family, friends and classmates for their support, I have a great team behind me.”
David also wishes his teammates on Team Ireland - Aaron Killane, James Morris and John Morris - the best of luck ahead of their solo rounds at the prestigious competition.
“I would also like to thank my sponsors, Apex Fire Ltd in Cavan and Flynn’s Sports Bar in Castlebar, Mayo,” he concludes.
