Remembering their fallen comrades with special day
A wreath laying ceremony will take place tomorrow in Con Smith Park in memory of army veterans who lost their lives during battle.
The event, which takes place on Sunday, November 20, was organised by the ONE O’Neill Cavan branch who are keen to remember their fallen comrades in a special way.
We have organised a Day of Remembrance for the past seven years,” says army veteran and chairman of the Cavan branch, Jimmy Scanlon. “We lay wreaths on behalf of County Cavan for all those who lost their lives in World War One and all wars, for the whole of the county and the island of Ireland.”
Attendees will assemble at 11am at the park where the flag will be raised at half mast. Following a quick rehearsal, the flag bearers will get into position before the wreaths are laid.
The event will be attended by members of the Irish Army, politicians and members of the Royal Air Force. It will also welcome members of the public.
“We welcome the public and it coincides with another event that’s on the same day, so we will be parading up to the John Joe O’Reilly memorial unveiling at the Post Office in the Market Square. Then we will follow that up with our memorial service in St Clare’s Church.”
At 12 noon, war memorabilia will be on show behind the Farnham Arms Hotel.
“We have the biggest range of World War One memorabilia ever to be shown. We also have a vehicle group coming up with a range of weapons they used in the Irish army and other armies, decommissioned weapons. It's also open to the public with free admission,” continued Jimmy.
The ONE O’Neill is made up of ex-service members of An Garda Síochána, Civil Defence and the Irish Red Cross. Its aim is to support the needs of Irish veterans by the provision of accommodation to homeless veterans in its Veterans' Hostels and other supports to veterans through its nationwide network of branches and Veterans’ Support Centres.
Cavan branch members are looking forward to welcoming the people of Cavan and beyond for this special Day of Remembrance.
