St Mogue’s College celebrate student success
St Mogue’s College in Bawnboy last month commemorated the exceptional achievements of both the school and its students at their Annual Awards Ceremony at the Slieve Russell Hotel.
Honouring academic and sporting successes, the ceremony has become a firm fixture on a the St Mogue’s calendar, with students and parents, staff and members of the Board of Management and Parents Association in attendance.
This was the first time the school has been able to host their awards post Covid, and the opportunity was taken to recognise members of the St Mogue’s team that helped retain the Danske Bank Ward Cup in 2020.
The ceremony took on a further “special significance” said Vice Principal, Martha Brady, honouring the late Luke Byrne, who sadly passed away towards the end of the last academic year following a road accident.
“We are also honouring Luke Byrne, a student who would have been an important part of the celebrations this evening,” she said. “Luke was an exceptional young man, gifted in so many ways, but most importantly with a great generosity of spirit.”
It saw the introduction of a new award category- ‘The Luke Byrne Spirit of St Mogue’s Award’- which will be now presented on an annual basis.
Guest speakers at the event included Cavan Captain, goalkeeper, and Ulster title winner, Raymond Galligan, as well as comedian and singer-songwriter Joe Rooney, best known for his role as ‘Fr Damo’ in the classic TV series, Fr Ted.
Ms Brady sincerely thanked the staff of St Mogue’s College whose “professionalism, skill and dedication” is unparalleled, going “above and beyond the call of duty” to ensure that every student reaches their full potential.
Ms Brady said the awards are “testament to the endeavours” of the students also.
“We could easily give an award to every student but unfortunately that is not possible. That is perhaps why we never tire of saying how proud we are of all our students in St Mogue’s College - not just for their accolades in the academic and sporting arena but also and perhaps more importantly for their politeness and exemplary behaviour, their willingness to undertake difficult challenges and their enthusiasm in embracing volunteerism in all its forms. They are wonderful ambassadors for their school, their community and their families.”
