Consultants appointed to ‘dangerous’ B’boro junction
Consultants have been appointed to what has been described as the “lethally dangerous” junction next to Bailieborough town’s Market Square, with roads connecting towards Kingscourt and Virginia.
The appointment follows a meeting between officials at the National Transport Authority and Cavan County Council earlier this year.
A plan will “now be devised” to make this area safer.
Previously, when the matter was raised at local level, councillors were informed that the location had been deemed unsuitable for a roundabout. But there was commitment to look at any alternative solutions.
A new traffic management system was one suggestion, with the Kingscourt Road entrance changed to a one-way system and a left turn only imposed onto Market Square.
Cavan-Monaghan TD, Niamh Smyth, welcomed the appointment of consultants.
“This follows on from a meeting with the National Transport Authority earlier in the summer, which I arranged, with key stakeholders from Cavan County Council on this lethally dangerous junction,” she said.
“I’m happy to report that, following on from these discussions and a number of meetings since, consultants have now been appointed. They will devise the best plan for a new layout for this junction. Then an application for funding will be made to the National Transport Authority. Once this step is reached, I will be liaising with the NTA and impressing upon them the need for monies to be allocated in a speedily fashion,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
