New search for Columba McVeigh

A new search is beginning today in a bid to locate the remains of Columba McVeigh.

Bog in north Monaghan is being excavated to try and find the body of the man who was abducted and murdered by the IRA almost 50 years ago.

One of the so-called "Disappeared", Columba McVeigh was 19 when he was abducted in 1975.

A number of other searches, the latest in 2019, have taken place since 1999 but have failed to locate his remains.

Investigators working for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR) will be at Bragan Bog outside Emyvale, County Monaghan.

A two acre section of the bog, which is mostly covered with forestry, is the centre of this search.

Columba McVeigh is one four cases being looked at by the ICLVR - others still to be located are Joe Lynskey, Seamus McGuire and Robert Nairac.

The organisation has so far located the remains of 13 people since it was set up jointly by the Irish and British Governments in 1999.
