Hospitality sector criticised for high prices
Councillors agreed to write to the Tourism Minister.
The hospitality sector has been criticised by Cavan Councillors with businesses urged “to have a good hard look” at themselves.
High hotel and car rental prices in particular have been highlighted and criticised in recent months as the summer tourist season got underway.
Councillors discussed the issue at their July meeting, where the hospitality sector was criticised for upping prices, particularly given the supports it received during the pandemic.
Raising the issue, Independent member Brendan Fay said people could travel to MAdrid “for half the price” of a holiday in Ireland, claiming a hotel room in Dublin was costing €540, without breakfast.
“It’s doing terrible damage to the Cead Míle Fáilte”, he told the meeting.
“The domestic tourist market supported the sector during Covid and now they’re being put to the sword.”
He called for rules, similar to those already in place for the pub trade, where prices must be displayed and cannot be increased within a certain period of time.
